"Lutheran Campus Ministry assists persons in academic settings to discover and fulfill their vocation in Jesus Christ" (Mission Statement) by drawing young adults into safe, caring, inviting, hospitable communities of worship, learning and service; nurturing students into greater maturity in the Christian faith; caring for the spiritual and emotional needs of young adults during a time of great change and opportunity; challenging and equipping talented and committed students for leadership in church and world, including ordained and lay professional ministry; and obeying the Great Commission by making disciples among persons 18 to 26, the age group that is least connected to the church.
Lutheran Campus Ministry is a Lutheran ministry found on college and university campuses, not just a ministry to Lutherans. It is both faithful to a rich theological tradition and driven by the challenges of the contemporary university. Drawing on the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, Campus Ministry bears witness to God's amazing grace within the context of higher education. Sensitive to the pastoral needs of those on campus and engaged in the intellectual discourse of the university, Campus Ministry strives to communicate the Gospel in fresh ways.
Ask Pastor Celene Welch, campus pastor to UNT and TWU, to talk about the mission of Lutheran Campus Ministry at Denton and she would likely talk about that ministry's Guiding Principles: affirming (1) Jesus is Lord, (2) everyone's welcome, (3) love changes people, (4) everybody has something to offer, and (5) the world needs what we have. The ministry in Denton is one of several campuses in the NT-NL Synod that have a Lutheran presence among the students and faculties. Many of our campuses have a ministry that is provided by peer ministers and local congregations. These ministries - focused on Word, Sacrament and pastoral care - extend the mission outreach of our congregations and synod. They are a way of reaching out with the invitation and encouragement to join us in the DiscipleLife.
Congregations can support their students during this accelerated time of growth and development by not getting disconnected from them. Include them in your prayers and mailings, inquire about their welfare and work, share their names with us at

There is no doubt that one of the steps along the road of faith formation for many people is their maturation in faith during their college years. In fact, faith formation during these years often feels more like a struggle and a crisis. It is a time of questioning, seeking and affirming one's self in relation to God and the world.
The NT-NL Synod seeks to be present for our college students at various college and university campuses around us. Please consider supporting the Campus Ministry Mission Fund through your prayer and contributions. Make it a part of your and your congregation's on-going regular giving so that this crucial part of our outreach can be fully realized. It is fitting that we do so for in this way we live out our DiscipleLife.
