DiscipleLife in the NT-NL Mission Area

2010 - 2011 Activities and Events

 October 2010

The NT-NL Men in Mission continues with its building program in furthering its mission of DiscipleLife for spiritual needs, for enabling and growing men in leadership roles and for involving men in community efforts.

Our efforts will be to reach every man in every congregation of the NT-NL.  We are developing this program through three regions.  The regions include; the Eastern region, the Central region and the Western region of the mission area.  At this time we do not have specific congregations assigned to any region.  Accessibility will be our target guide.

We need project leaders, team leaders and members living in a region to coordinate one or more of the programs/activities/events.  We also pray for the funding to help in this development process.

We began this year in February with a general meeting at Briarwood Retreat Center in Argyle, Texas.

Officers elected during at that February meeting included:
Davis Tubre, President, Calvary Lutheran Church, Richland Hills, Texas
Brandon Parsons, Treasurer, Christ Lutheran, Dallas, Texas
Dick Wentzel, Secretary, Advent Lutheran, Arlington, Texas
Justin Tergerson, St. Olaf Lutheran, Cranfills Gap, Texas continued to serve as the Vice President.

At Large Board Members elected at that time included:
Jim Monkman, Spirit of the Mountain, Golden, Colorado
Jerry Hester, Shepherd King, Lubbock, Texas
Tim Johnson, King of Glory, Dallas, Texas
Tom Ness, Board Advisor, Advent Lutheran, Arlington, Texas
Henry Howe, Region 4 Director, Christ the Servant Lutheran, Denton, Texas -- A frequent visitor to our Board meetings

Our first project of this year began with a volunteer team of Lutheran Men in Mission lead by Phil Schrader, Four Way Enterprise.  This team implemented and completed trenching and staining of a large fence and its surrounding a Mosaic Dallas residence home.

Mosaic is a Lutheran developed faith-based non-profit organization serving persons with intellectual disabilities. Mosaic serves over 3,500 persons and is located in 14 states with some 40 locations serving its population.  Gentlemen, I have seen the value of these services and how much it affects families.  As one elderly person said to me, “without Mosaic, who will lovingly take care of my 24 year old child as they are doing?”

During Oct 15 – 17 our Lutheran Men in Mission held a retreat at Meridian State Park near Meridian, Texas.  Wendel Withrow, President of the Texas Sierra Club called this park “a hidden treasure” and yes it was such a treasure.  Justin Tergerson organized this event.

Friday and Saturday evening, Matt Wallace, Greater Good Global Support Services (G3S2.com) from Cranfills Gap spoke to our group about our core values, building spirituality through education and training, growing in Disciple Life and working with our communities.

Matt’s organization provides logistical, troubleshooting and communications support to NGO (non-Government Organizations) personnel, expatriates and others living or traveling in cultures other than their own.

G3S2 also educates and prepares individuals who intend to invest their lives in overseas humanitarian and Greater Good work.  G3S2 activities are intended to maximize, promote and support Greater Good efforts around the globe.  More information about this organization can be found at his website: www.g3s2.com

Saturday morning the men had breakfast prepared by the Cranfills Gap campsite chef and now our LMM chef, Justin Tergerson.  (Justin is a leader who also works with Boy Scouts in his area).

We then drove to “The Rock Church located outside of Cranfills Gap for fellowship, time and service.  The Rock Church is a Lutheran church founded in 1886.  It is maintained by St. Olaf Lutheran Church of Cranfills Gap Texas.

During this time we heard a heart-wrenching service.  You could hear a pin drop while listening to this service of love, spirituality and patience.  It was about a young man who went astray and is now in prison.  This service examined the pain, the anxiety, the hate with eventual forgiveness and the hope of the family enduring this ordeal.

After visiting a community Oktoberfest and then holding a short business meeting we all scattered to our desires.  We lived up to the website announcement.   Some of us went fishing, some went napping and/or studying and some went kayaking.  During the evening, the men built a fire in a fire ring and enjoyed stories and tales under a beautiful sky and the watchful eyes of the Park rangers.

Folks, we are in a major fund raising drive to help us accomplish the goals we have established.  We pray that you will help us achieve the NT-NL DiscipleLife goals through your participation and also letting others know about our mission.  We are looking forward to a Great year with you.  Come and be a part of it.

Major Initiatives and events:

Lutheran Men in Mission Tri-Synodical Gathering and NT-NL LMM Elections Friday February 17 and Saturday February 18, Brenham Texas

February Friday 17- Saturday 18; Save the dates.  We are developing our final plans for a great Tri-Synodical Gathering.  The actual schedule will be out shortly.

More information, including information for wives or friends who might be arriving with you but not attending, will be distributed as information is finalized.  We are also currently researching transportation resources from/to the Dallas/Fort Worth region down to Brenham.  Please respond to Davis This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 972.827.7140 if you are interested in this transportation.

St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brenham Texas will be our host church.  Our target audience includes; Lutheran men from age 16 – 100 and any un-churched friends.  So just come on down with us and bring a friend for fun, fellowship and education.

We are looking for activities to begin with a tour of the Blue Bell Ice Cream Manufacturing Facility for those who can arrive earlier during the day.  (We will address the time shortly).  You can expect Friday night will include social gatherings (men meeting men) before other activities and conclusions for the night.

Saturday look for a great day starting with a breakfast.  We should have at least one morning presentation.  At noon we expect each Synod will break-out for business and elections.

For the NT-NL DiscipleLife Lutheran Men in Mission, three positions will be open, Vice President, Treasurer and one At Large Position.  We are seeking leaders interested in guiding us through the full commitments of activities we have established as goals of the year.

We will need all board members support and help from project managers and future region leaders working with us.  At the same time we will be addressing the commitments for the remainder of 2011 and subsequent planning for 2012 and 2013.  Be prepared to help guide us through that year building the mission of the LMM in our Synod.

During the afternoon we expect one or more presentations.  Closing should be tentatively around 4:00 pm when we depart for our mission area as Disciples of Men reaching out to train others in the Grace of our Lord.

Mission visits, spring, late summer and fall

With appropriate funding, contact development and coordination of efforts, we will attempt to build regional Lutheran Men in Mission groups in the central, eastern and western areas.  We pray for the leadership development and funding in each of the areas.  We need the support of men as area leaders and project managers in each of the areas.  Help us spread the word.  We need you to speak up.  Contact Davis This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Our plans are to introduce a father/son banquet with a time for fellowship and enjoyment during the late spring or early fall period.  These events are contingent upon adequate startup funding and a project manager.

Region retreats

We anticipate region retreats can be set up given adequate funding and participation.  Please contact Davis Tubre 972.827.7140 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information.
