The Mission Area Elects a Bishop
Watch ELCA Chuchwide Representative Wm Chris Boerger’s presentation at the 2015 NT-NL Mission Assembly on the bishop election process.
At the Mission Council meeting on Friday, February 6, 2015, Bishop Kevin Kanouse read the letter where he announces his intent to retire as Bishop if the NT-NL Mission Area in June 2016. This letter had been shared with pastors and SAWLs at the Tri-Synodical Theological Convention in January and emailed to the Mission Council.
Bishop Kanouse will offer his official resignation/request to retire in January 2016, and it will be voted on at that time. He is making his intent to retire known now so the Council has these 17 months to prepare for the process of electing a new Bishop.
Mission Council Vice President Stephanie Varnum outlined the process to elect a new bishop and the responsibilities of the council for 2015-16, starting with appointing a Bishop Election Committee, which will be made up of two pastors and three lay people, and a Transition Team.
VP Varnum emphasized her desire to include people from all over the mission area for these groups, not just people from the DFW Metroplex, and asked the council to send her names of any possible candidates. She also noted her intent to appoint retired pastors to the Bishop Election Committee, in order to allow all active clergy the time to prayerfully consider the call to serve as Bishop.
The council engaged in conversation about the election process and transition to a new Bishop.
“This process will be important, but it will not overshadow the other work we are doing,” VP Varnum said, highlighting the upcoming Mission Assembly, the Dedication of the new Mission Center at Briarwood and the new partnership between the mission office staff and Briarwood, and the other ongoing ministries of NT-NL.
